Brazil – Wind: EDP Renováveis building 70 MW wind park in Rio Grande do Sul

Portuguese firm EDP Renováveis broke ground March 24 on its €100 million Parque Eólico de Tramandaí in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul.  The project includes 31 wind turbines for a total capacity of 70 MW.  According to the company, it will be the third largest wind park in Latin America and will produce around 2% of the state’s annual electricity needs.

Cost remains an important barrier to wind project developments in Brazil.  Power quoted the head of Brazil’s wind association (Abeeólica) as saying:

“Há fatores que aumentam os custos de investimentos, como equipamentos, estradas, impostos e licenças ambientais”, explica Fiuza. Segundo ele, os custos de geração de energia eólica nos Estados Unidos são aproximadamente 40% mais baratos que no Brasil.
